Enhancing the Experience
A number of the projects I’ve worked on have been enhanced by the use of video, and specifically motion graphics. Here are a few of the ways that the work I’ve done has helped my clients solve problems:
- Enhance sales presentations to win business
- Improve usability of interfaces
- Immerse viewers emotionally into an experience
- Improve brand perception through production value
- Demonstrate complex ideas with visual storytelling
Fundamentally the process of creating a motion graphics piece is not so very different than any other creative. Every project begins with gaining an understanding of what it is the client hopes to get out of the project, and we brainstorm some ideas, coming up with a rough outline, or in more complex projects a detailed script.
From here, I will sketch rough storyboards, playing off of and expanding on the outline or script. I might go back and forth in this phase for several rounds in order to make sure we nail the concept at this early stage.
I will often also play around with prototypes at this stage, testing out ideas for animations that might be harder to visualize with static storyboards.
Once the concept is solid, I create more refined digital storyboards to get a better feel for the mood and how the brand integrates with the piece.
While developing the storyboards, I create them as a quick animatic, to begin to get a sense for the overall timing of the piece.
As we get more refined, I try to work out everything before diving into the actual animation, since all the ideas are much easier to tweak beforehand. But when we have a pretty good sense of where things are going, I move everything from static mockups and storyboards into a rudimentary animation, playing with the ideas we’ve been developing in the previous steps.
Animation refinements can go for several rounds, and no matter how much preparation is done in the beginning, there is always something new to make adjustments to.
Overall, it is a very organic process with a lot of overlap, but the goal is to move forward in a way that allows us to try as many ideas as we can in as short an amount of time to find something that meets the clients true goals.
